No BS Review of MagicJack USB Phone Service

Greetings all,

I know it has been a while, but I have been busy with other things. I wanted to write a review about a Non lock related product that just blew me away. MagicJack. Buy now most of you have heard of this or seen the infomercials. I had never seen the infomercial and the mere fact that it was advertised on TV turned me off. Having an infomercial made is sound like the ShamWow or the Ginzu knife.. But I saw a LOT of forum chatter on it especially on slickdeals.net and was curious.

I read reviews and was impressed. If the device even worked half the time it was worth $40. That was $20 for the device and $20 a YEAR for unlimited local and long distance calls. BUT, the reviews mentioned MagicJack.com customer service and billing issues. The Free Trial wasn’t. Sometimes people were overcharged, sometimes they were double charged. So I knew not to buy it direct.

I decided to buy one from a website I found on the net: www.BuyMagicJackCheap.com I paid $34 and had it in three days. On this site, they mention all the problems with ordering direct and the hassle. They also show where to buy one CHEAPER than the $40 plus shipping MagicJack.com charges..

So I bought one. It showed up three days later. Packaging looked good. Device was smaller than a computer mouse, and included a USB extension cable and instruction sheet. Nothing else. I was a bit worried, but the instructions said plug it in and wait three minutes. Sure enough 2 minutes later, a box popped up on my screen asking me for name, address, email, etc and asking me to select an area code. A minute later, I had dial tone. The first call sounded good. Clear, with a bit of echo. I attributed that to the cheapo $9 cordless phone. Next call with a regular phone sounded great. I couldn’t tell I was talking on MagicJack.

Here’s a few things I found out:

Requires Computer with XP, VIsta or Mac and a high speed internet connection.

Must be plugged into computer directly on powered USB hub.

Can change area code later if they don’t have yours. See area code list online for more info.

Voice mail, Call waiting and Caller ID is included free.

International calls are possible. Rates vary according to country. Time can be purchased as needed.

Can buy MagicJack here: www.BuyMagicJackCheap.com for the best deal and no hassle customer service.

I’ll be back soon to review some lock related products, probably a safe or two..

Review of Morning Industry Electronic Touchpad Locks

Tagged Under : , ,

I recently had the chance to help a friend install a Morning Industry Touchpad Electronic lock PAKK-01P. I have installed many keyless locks, electronic and mechanical, but was very impressed by the quality of the Morning Industry Touchpad Electronic Lock. What really impressed me is this lock comes in a normal door knob, not a lever handle. A knob is rare among electronic keyless locks, making this an excellent choice for anyone looking for a lock, but who doesn’t want a commercial looking lever handle. Read the rest of this entry »

The truth about Keyless Locks..

Tagged Under : , , , ,

Lately I’ve had a few questions and inquiries about Keyless lock. Why do I need one? seems to be the biggest question. How Secure are they? Seems to be a close second. Hard to Install?

Why do you need a keyless lock?

A keyless lock can help improve your life. Ever been outside and hear the phone ring? Depending one where you are you had to go all the way around the house to get in. Now if your house was like mine (and you didn’t have keyless locks like I do), you’d have to go through a gate, watching that the dogs don’t get out and just barely miss the call. Now, with keyless locks, you simply go to the closest door, swipe your finger or enter your passcode and open the door.

But Chas, I can hear you ask. HOW SAFE IS IT?

Keyless locks are generally as safe or safer than regular keyed locks. Some take batteries, (electronic locks) and if they do, they will alert you with plenty of time to change the batteries. Some electronic locks include a remote for your keys, some even use fingerprint to access. If its a mechanical lock, it doesn’t take batteries, but is limited to one passcode and buttons. Keyless locks are used on airports, colleges, government buildings, by NASA, and many other high security buildings. There is no doubt that keyless locks are here to stay.

A True Poo Story or No Sh-t SureLock…

Its not often you see good viral marketing commercials for door locks, but I found one and thought it was worth sharing. The video is 3 mins long (a bit long for tv) so was probably designed for the internet. The ad is for Sure Lock, but that doesn’t occur until the very end.

This is the funniest commercial I have seen in a while that appears to be deigned just for the net. Enjoy!

Black and Decker Kwikset SmartScan revisited

Tagged Under : ,

Thanks to all of you who have responded to this review. I have received a ton of questions concerning this lock and figured I would answer them all here.

1. What Type of batteries does this lock take? The Black and Decker Smartscan Deadbolt lock takes 4 AA batteries. I would not use rechargables, as they may expire while you are out, thus locking you out. Remember to always take a key with you just in case.

2. Can you show me a video of the lock in operation?

3. You mentioned a instruction manual and installation videos on the article. Where can I find them again? Read the rest of this entry »
